Chicago Bulls “See Red” Playoff Video

When the Chicago Bulls called me up last week to see if I could provide extra support to prep them for the 2014 NBA Playoffs, I naturally did not turn them down. Not only was I excited to be collaborating with two former colleagues, but I was thrilled to get to expand my clientele with such a classic franchise. The Bulls provided me with a great video edit of their mascot, Benny The Bull, running past well known Chicago landmarks. I, then, had to take that footage and ‘paint the town red’! My Easter weekend was shot with endless hours of rotoscoping, but it was a fun project and I have a new song stuck in my head!

Thanks Michelle & Emily! Look forward to the next project!!

My Top 5 Reasons To Visit Cabarete, Dominican Republic

You knew it was coming eventually. I am a big endorser of Cabarete, on the North Shore of the Dominican Republic, and here are 5 reasons why you should go and become one yourself!

cabarete_ocean_playground_kitebeach_dominican

5—THE CULTURE
So much is to be said for getting out of your comfort zone and experiencing different cultures. Even though I’ve traveled to Cabarete 5 or 6 times now and my Spanish is pretty darn good, I always get something new out of it. My Spanish speaking skills tend to improve 5 fold, regardless of how much I tense up when someone speaks too fast for me to follow. I meet new locals (mostly cab drivers) and they are always very excited to talk about their life in the DR and exchange stories.

4—NO SHORTAGE OF ACTIVITIES
There are definitely water sports to try, but if you want a break from swallowing salt water, you can rent a moto and drive down the La Boca or go on one of the many Iguana Mama Tours (I’ve been to Monkey Jungle and zip lined, but am dying to do the waterfalls!) If you’re a foodie, there are actually some really good restaurants, like Bliss (happens to be owned by a couple who worked & met in Bermuda), Blue Moon, which is one of the coolest places you can go (they cater to larger groups, so if you’re only one or two people, call them early to see if they can squeeze you in), Kahuna has real poutine for you Canadians, and Gorditos has some of the yummiest fish tacos. Ever. Of course, there are dozens & dozens of bars…which leads me to my next reason.

3—MOJITO BAR

CABARETE_BEACH_mojitobar_fruit
Um. Yes. Mojito Bar gets its own spot on the list. This is a must stop if you’re traveling to Cabarete, and now, with 2 locations (one at Cabarete Beach and one at Kite beach), it is that much easier to get caught in the rain and end up staying ALL afternoon. With amazing flavors of mojitos, an awesome happy hour deal and surprisingly delicious food (big fan of the crustinis) it is really easy and enjoyable to spend an afternoon there. It’s right on the beach, so you can watch kites go by, people watch and if Sonia, the Italian owner, is there, you’re in for a treat. She is one of the friendliest people on the beach. If you don’t have a while to spend there, make sure you get a mojito “para llevar” (maybe chinola flavored!) to enjoy as you walk down the beach!

2—PEOPLE ARE FRIENDLY
The locals and the expats in Cabarete are extremely welcoming. Just a few days in this beach town and you start to recognize people when you go for breakfast or are out walking the beach. Regardless of how little English someone speaks, they can normally at least point you in the right direction or give you a great recommendation. Maybe it’s the weather and the never ending sunshine (even when it’s raining, it’s an awesome place), but the smiles in Cabarete are always out.

1—THE WATER SPORTS SCENE
Kite surfing, wind surfing, paddle boarding, surfing. ALL IN ONE PLACE. Seriously, what else do you need? When the wind is low in the morning, paddle boarding and surfing is the way to go. Don’t worry if you’ve never done either of these sports, there are tons of affordable places to take lessons from, like Vela & Ali’s. As soon as the wind picks up (usually in the afternoon), kite surfers and wind surfers storm the beach. Like the other water sports, there are great places to learn (LEK is a good place to start). But if you’re like me and aren’t ready to commit to it yet, there is no better place to tolerate getting slapped in the face with sand by the wind. You find yourself entranced in the sea of colorful kites performing in front of you, like a choreographed dance. Time passes so fast and you don’t even realize that the entire right side of your body has just had a great exfoliation treatment.

So. Is it time to go back yet?

Sketchbook Page—Colorful Fish Designed Surfboard

I keep drawing more surfboard designs and I realize how large my collection would be if they were actually manufactured. Today’s colorful, fish patterned, surfboard sketch is of the tropical variety. With so many great places to snorkel in Bermuda, the inspiration for this fish patterned surfboard series is endless!

DIY Sofa Table With Ocean Depth Map Artwork

I am so excited to reveal this sofa table which I DIY-ed using an old piece of outdoor furniture that I already had. The outdoor bar was getting no use, sitting in the yard, paint chipping and had horribly dirty glass. The ocean depth map art was inspired by my natural surroundings in Bermuda and the rest of the color scheme that I am implementing in my coastal living room.

Very Cool, Very Detailed & Illustrated Gig/Film Poster

These two illustrated posters have so many awesome details! I can’t stop looking at them! From the hand drawn type on one to the half-tone on the other, they are just too cool. I also wanted to show them together because of their common theme. Although they are both conceptually similar with their information displayed as a large tattoo spanning an entire back, they are still so stylistically different. I love both approaches to these posters.

The Lollapalooza poster below was done by Alvaro Arteaga, of Chile. You can see the whole project here and more of his work here.

Donough O’Malley is behind the awesome, illustrated & screen printed film festival poster below. The film festival was surf themed, so naturally, I love it even more. Check out the whole project here and more of Donough’s work, here.

SKETCHBOOK-WHALE-OCEAN-DRAWING-WAVES-HUMPBACK-COMPOSITION

I can’t seem to stop drawing waves, whales, fish, sunshine and shells! I guess that’s okay, since I like all of those things so much. For this composition, I was inspired by something I saw on Instagram the other day (my preferred social media outlet!) Enjoy this week’s sketch!

Panasonic Cafe Digital Signage & Animations

As recently as this week I completed some work via MediaPlace for the Panasonic Avionics division. This division of the well known company is geared around customer experience & the entertainment you see when you fly a commercial airline (who knew, right?). The Hangar Cafe is now open and serving these hard working people on the daily and they have no clue that some girl in Bermuda created all of the digital signage, menus & welcome animations that are up and running on a constant loop.

Here are some style frames from the welcome animations. Really fun and very different from my usual projects!

Sketchbook Page—My Heart Is Out At Sea

angle-my-heart-is-out-at-sea-sketch-waves-hand-drawn-type

Today’s sketch is directly related to how I am feeling TODAY. My heart is out at sea most days, but today, it is way, way out there off the horizon line, basking in the sunshine and soaking up that salt air. I can’t tell you what it is about the ocean and what it does to me, how it makes me feel, how it can instantly calm any nerves, fears, worries, but it does, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Today, my heart it definitely out at sea.

7 Spring Beach Essentials

Today I wanted to share some Spring beach essentials to have ready for any day that is nice enough to get out and enjoy some sunshine. I have been enjoying summertime-like days since I arrived in Cabarete, Dominican Republic almost a week ago, and I’m really hoping that the Bermuda ‘Winter’ has passed by the time I arrive home on Sunday. I forgot to pack a beach bag, so I have been using some ever-classy plastic shopping bags to tote around my book, sunscreen and music. Hopefully, this little visual guide will help you be more prepared than I was!

Cool 3D Typography “Tips” Everyone Should Follow

make_it_count_3d_typography_marquee_cool_type_design

Happy Friday! How cool are these 3D typography tips? As I get more and more into 3D programs, my respect for others who are designing grows. Getting textures correct and lighting right is no easy task. This collection of frames from Federico Kanno are not only great in execution of 3D typography, but I love the messaging. These that I have shared are ones I try and live by on the daily, but you should definitely check out his entire project here.

Bright Colored, Gold Foil, Indian Wedding Invitations

What a mouthful! But how else would you describe these?? I’ve been crazy busy with some contract work and traveling, but what better way to come back from a few days off the blog than with these babies?

gold_foil_wedding_invitations_bright_colors_indian_inserts

I’m not sure if I’m more excited for Shubha’s wedding, or for these amazing invitations (patting self on back)! There is nothing better than a client that truly trusts you to create something, and about the only requirement Shubha had was that she REALLY wanted to incorporate gold foil on a budget. Regardless of the number of inserts, different sizing, and cultural elements that needed to be included, we put our heads together and used only ONE die to create these foils, keeping costs low. I adore the result. They are making me very happy. And it will make me even more happy to see these two live happily ever after!

PS—If you missed this cool couple’s save the dates, shame on you! Just kidding! You can check them out HERE.

Thanks, Shubs, for letting me be a part of your special day. Love you BIG time! xxoo
